Audio Skips when doing X (eg. Connecting to the Internet)

Some hardware (eg. COM ports / Modems) can lock the computer for a couple of seconds while running particular tasks. This has been reported with some dial-up connections. It relates to the particular hardware (eg. COM port and Modem Driver) and can sometimes be resolved by changing system hardware (or simply avoiding the activity during critical play times).
