Foot Pedal Installation Guide

Setup Guide
Express Scribe supports the Professional Foot Pedal by VEC (USB + DB9) and VPE (USB + DB9) plus a few others which connect to a computers game control port (15 pin). Generally Olympus pedals are not supported.

Please select from the following list for the appropriate setup guide for the pedal you have purchased.

Professional Foot Pedal by VEC (USB)
Setup
Setting up the FPVECUSB for Express Scribe is easy. For Windows computers just follow the instructions below. An additional driver will need to be downloaded and installed. This download is an automated process.
  1. Download and install Express Scribe
  2. Plug in the foot pedal to an available USB port on your computer.
  3. If Express Scribe is open and running, close it and restart the application.
  4. Open Settings -> Control.
  5. Tick "Use Foot Pedal Playback control".
  6. Select "VEC Pedals USB".
  7. Make sure that 3-Pedal is selected.
  8. Select the "Foot Pedal Control Setup Wizard".
  9. Follow the instructions on the screen.
The pedals should now be correctly installed.

For Mac OS X just plug them into the USB socket and run Express Scribe and they will be detected normally.


Professional Foot Pedal VEC/VPE DB9 (Serial Port)
Setup
Setting up the VEC FPVECDB9 or the VPE FPVPEDB9 for Express Scribe is easy. Just follow the instructions below.
  1. Download and install Express Scribe.
  2. Locate the com-port socket at the back of your computer. If it contains 25 pins then you will need an adaptor.
  3. Plug the pedals in and restart the computer.
  4. Open Express Scribe. Open Settings and on the Control tab enable "Use Foot Pedal Playback control".
  5. Select the correct COM port - e.g. COM1 (Serial).
  6. Click the Foot Pedal Control Setup Wizard button.
  7. Follow the instructions on the screen. If a Foot Pedal Hardware Error message saying "Unable to open COM port" is displayed, the COM port you selected in Step 5 is not the COM port that the foot pedal is connected to. Select a different COM port and run the Foot Pedal Control Setup Wizard again.
The pedals should now be correctly installed.


Game-Port (Serial) Foot Pedal
Setup
Setting up a Game Port (Serial) foot pedal for Express Scribe is easy. Just follow the instructions below.
  1. Download and install Express Scribe.
  2. Locate the gameport on your computer - it is probably in the sound card and receives a plug containing 15 pins.
  3. Plug in the pedals.
  4. Restart the computer.
  5. Once the computer has restarted go to Start - Control Panel in Windows.
  6. Open "Game Controllers"
  7. Select Add -> 2 axis, 4-button
  8. Select "test" and "test your pedals". Pressing a different pedal should cause a different number to light up.
  9. Close the control panel and open Express Scribe.
  10. Open Settings and on the Control tab and tick "Use foot Pedal Playback control".
  11. Select "GamePort 1" (if you only have one gameport)
  12. Click on the "Foot Pedal Control Setup Wizard".
  13. Follow the instructions on the screen.
The pedals should now be correctly installed.


Professional Foot Pedal by VPE (USB)
Setup
Setting up the FPVPEUSB for Express Scribe is easy. Just follow the instructions below. It is a two step process, but if you have already completed USB setup or Games Port setup then please ignore Stage 1.

Stage 1:
To setup your VPE / VPedal USB pedal, you must firstly ensure that the pedal is talking properly to Windows:
  1. Download and install Express Scribe.
  2. Plug in the foot pedal to an available USB port on your computer.
  3. Go to Start – Control Panel and select Gaming Options. On the Controllers tab click on Add and Enable Galy USB Joystick.
  4. Click OK and from the Controllers tab select Properties and choose the Test tab.
  5. Press Play on the foot pedal, the display will light Buttons 1 & 2.
  6. Press Fast Forward on the foot pedal, the display will light Button 2.
  7. Press Rewind on the foot pedal, the display will light Button 1.
  8. The foot pedal is “talking” to Windows correctly.
Stage 2:
To setup your VPE / VPedal USB pedal, you must now ensure that the pedal is talking properly to Express Scribe:
  1. Open Express Scribe.
  2. Go to Settings and choose Settings.
  3. Click on the Control tab and select Use Foot Pedal Playback Control under Foot Pedal Control.
  4. From the drop down box next to Port: choose GamePort1 or USBGame1.
  5. From the drop down box next to No. choose 3-Pedal
  6. Click on the "Foot Pedal Control Setup Wizard".
  7. Follow the instructions on the screen.
The pedals should now be correctly installed.

For Mac OS X just plug them into the USB socket and run Express Scribe and they will be detected normally.
