McAfee Virus Checker reports a virus after a recording starts. The reported file be a wave file (*.wav)

This problem started with McAfee Virus Checker in December 2004. Since then a number of customers have told us that virus scan is reporting wav files as being infected.

We have not received any reports of Norton anti-virus users with such a problem (or users of any other anti-virus software for that matter). Given this, it is safe to say that the problem really lies with the McAfee software being too over-zealous in its detection of viruses. It seems that whenever our software creates audio files, the creation of the file is what triggers the problem. Why the McAfee anti-virus software is targeting audio files we have no idea.

Both .wav format and .mp3 format files are audio files, and to the best of our knowledge these audio file formats cannot contain viruses. Even if one did, it is impossible for any infection to be spread from non-streaming audio file formats such as wav and mp3. It appears that the virus check software is confused by what it finds in the audio file and is therefore incorrectly reporting this as an infected file. We are confident that these reports are false alarms.
