SSL/TLS Certificate Install Wizard
The SSL/TLS Certificate Install Wizard is used to generate and/or install an SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) or TLS (Transport Layer Security) certificate that enables clients to make secure, encrypted connections to your server program.
The wizard can be used in one of three ways:
If you want to request a new certificate from a certificate authority:
- Select "Generate a new certificate signing request (CSR)" and click Next.
- Enter the certificate details and click Next.
-
Enter a passphrase and re-type the passphrase exactly the same.
Write down the passphrase and keep it in a safe place for future reference.
Click Next.
- Type in, or browse to, the folder where the output files should be created, then click Next.
- The certificate signing request (CSR) file and private key file will be created, and their file paths will be shown.
- Click Finish to close the wizard.
The SSL/TLS Certificate Install Wizard does not submit the certificate signing request (CSR) to a certificate authority.
Please consult your preferred certificate authority for details on how to submit this request.
Once the request has been submitted and the certificate authority has provided your certificate, please run the SSL/TLS Certificate Install Wizard again and follow the "If you want to install an existing certificate" instructions below.
If you want to generate and install a new self-signed certificate:
See Self-Signed SSL Certificates for important information about self-signed certificates.
- Select "Generate and install a new self-signed certificate" and click Next.
- Enter the certificate details and click Next.
-
Enter a passphrase and re-type the passphrase exactly the same.
Write down the passphrase and keep it in a safe place for future reference.
Click Next.
- The self-signed certificate will be generated and installed.
- Click Finish to close the wizard.
If you want to install an existing certificate:
- Select "Install an existing certificate" and click Next.
- Type in, or browse to, the file path of the certificate file (eg. C:\Users\User\Desktop\certificate.pem) and the file path of the private key file (eg. C:\Users\User\Desktop\private.key). Click Next.
- Enter the passphrase that was used to generate the certificate signing request or self-signed certificate and click Next.
- The certificate will be installed.
- Click Finish to close the wizard.
- Attempt to access your server using a secure connection to verify that the certificate is valid.
