Why does the Windows version convert different files than the Mac version?

For each of the formats we try to convert in this order:
a) With our own code
b) With a downloadable component
c) With the media library specific to the platform (ie. DirectX or Quicktime)

If a file doesn't convert on one platform but does on another it is usually because we don't have the component built for that platform/it isn't available or because the platform specific library doesn't support it.
