Advantages of VoIP
  • VoIP lets you transmit more than one telephone call down the same broadband-connected telephone line, making it a simple way to add an extra telephone line to a home or office.
  • VoIP is also extremely flexible. Because VoIP is location independent, you can take your VoIP phone with you wherever you go, and provided you are connected to the Internet you can receive incoming calls.
  • If you are looking to setup a complete telephony system, VoIP cuts out the need for dedicated phone wiring as it runs through your existing computer network. It also cuts out the need for special voice modems or telephony boards.
Other Things You May Need to Know About VoIP
  • Making calls from VoIP to someone on another computer

To make calls to someone on another computer, you must both be connected to the Internet and must both sign up for a "SIP" number.

Once you have obtained a SIP number, every time you connect to the Internet your "IP address" (eg 69.23.128.2) will be sent to the SIP provider's server. This means that anyone trying to contact your SIP number will be automatically referred to your current IP address. Computer <-> Computer connections are basically IP address <-> IP address connections. The reason why you need a SIP number is that for most users the IP address is not static - your ISP provides you with a new IP address every time you log onto the Internet.

A list of recommended free SIP service providers can be found at https://www.nch.com.au/talk/sip.html.

  • Making calls from VoIP to someone on a normal phone line

In order to make a call from VoIP to a normal phone line you will need to sign up with a VOIP Gateway. This normally (but not always) involves a monthly line fee. It is however almost always much a cheaper option than the cost of normal phone lines. Some Gateways are listed at https://www.nch.com.au/talk/sip.html. Once signed up, you can dial out to normal phones. Your Gateway will also provide you with a normal phone number for outsiders on a normal phone to dial.
